The Dubai Walk Master Plan has been approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The plan is a future looking move to turn Dubai into a walkable city. His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the UAE and First Deputy Ruler of Dubai, also attended.
The Dubai Walk Master Plan focuses on accessibility, safety and an enjoyable walking experience, creating an integrated network of walkways with uninterrupted paths and extensive green areas.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum emphasized that improving the quality of life in Dubai remains one of the key objectives of the emirate’s strategic vision. He highlighted that innovative infrastructure and the creation of unique destinations strengthen Dubai’s global position, making it the top city for living, working and visiting.
He stated:
“We have approved the Dubai Walk Master Plan, a 6,500 km network of modern walkways covering 160 areas across the emirate. The plan includes constructing 3,300 km of new walkways and rehabilitating 2,300 km of existing ones by 2040, in addition to more than 900 km of walkways planned beyond 2040. It also involves developing 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses to enhance connectivity. This ambitious plan aims to increase pedestrian and soft mobility from 13% to 25% by 2040.”
He added: “Dubai is a city of the future, committed to creating a healthy and happy urban environment. The Dubai Walk Master Plan promotes active lifestyles and provides exercise opportunities for all, making walking a central part of our culture and daily lives. This vision will position Dubai as one of the world’s healthiest and most sustainable cities.
Implementation Phases:
The master plan will be implemented in three phases from 2025 up to 2040. Pilot phase 2025–2027 will see the creation of 17 km pathways along two major routes.
The plan focuses on enhancing urban connectivity by developing pedestrian infrastructure, comprising 110 bridges and underpasses. Some of the key projects include:
Dubai Walk plan includes routes designed to reflect the identity of each area. These routes will be equipped with the following facilities and will be connected to the public transport network of Dubai city:
A smart application will be initiated to help track walking distance and time, route walked and points gained; likewise information about the pathways’ features, nearby events and rewards available can be given.
